(Violence and discrimination against Arab and Muslim Americans)

http://www.npr.org/2011/09/29/140902739/units-autonomy-may-be-why-fbi-missed-bias

“Wired magazine reported on a counterterrorism training session at the FBI training center in Quantico, Va., that was led by an FBI employee. The slides of the PowerPoint presentation obtained by Wired magazine made clear that the instructor was teaching agents not only that Islam was a violent religion, but also was erroneously linking religiosity to terrorism. He said the more religious a Muslim in this country was, the more he should be seen as a potential suspect.”

2。A beautifully performed poem:

Who can pull off high-end fashion with a health mask?
via Stylites – www.stylites.net
Fashion blog following current street fashion in China (看起来好像The Sartorialist)

。。the jarring juxtaposition of the outfit and the mask. I couldn’t help but think about the SARS outbreak, circa 2002.  As amazing as he looks, the mask is a reminder of the reality the country is facing: 一方面,China is a place of suave and finesse, but it still grapples with very rough and very human problems.  另一方面,if there is one country that can successfully pull off this getup…it would be China.

More than Morethan36计: Exposure to Chinese through contemporary art

But as much as I like learning how peaches can be employed as deadly tools in tense political situations, I find it helpful to diversify my language learning resources just to keep things fresh.  There are many facets of China that fascinate me, and right now I’m intrigued by its modern art scene crafted and cultivated by both Chinese and Chinese-Americans.  If this interests you or you crave a break from policy/military musings, I suggest you visit the following:

NeoCHA  http://edge.neocha.com/zh

A modern and quirky artscape is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when I think of 中国。Too often I look at China through a one-dimensional prism and all I end up seeing is a growing superpower, a developing country, and a staunch proponent of the “no first use” policy of nuclear weapons. Myopic much? NeoCHA provides an escape from this politically,security-tinted perception of China and reminds me through amazing visuals that it, too, embraces and inspires creativity.

Chinese-American friends based in NY started this blog to compile everything cool about China.  So far, so good.   They mostly post interesting pictures and videos, sometimes in Chinese.  It’s a very quick and fun way to get in touch with Chinese pop-culture.

I will attempt to use Chinese frequently in this space, but there will be times when I will hit the language barrier and resort to English to convey my thoughts. Apologies in advance.

I really believe that learning a language is one of the most daring things I could do in my lifetime. It is an active decision to engage something completely foreign and embrace the prospect of failure. Error is inevitable, but it also opens the path to learning. I’m sure that you’ll come across mistakes in this blog (if you already haven’t, I would be incredibly impressed) and that’s quite alright –  I want to make those mistakes, be comfortable with their existence, correct them, and move on.
